  • Ledger Live Mac Dock Question Mark: Locate the Missing Target

Repair the Destination Before the Icon

A question mark on a Ledger Live Dock item suggests that its application target needs attention. Find the app before changing system preferences. Ledger Wallet is the current product name, and an old launcher can remain after an app is moved, renamed or removed.

Apple’s Dock question mark reference concerns an application icon. Do not confuse it with a flashing folder question mark during Mac startup, which is a different computer problem and has a different support procedure.

Question One: Is an Installed Application Available?

Use Finder to inspect the Applications locations you intentionally use. Search by the current and former names if necessary, then check the object’s kind and path. A result may be a complete app, a disk image or an alias leading somewhere else.

If you find only a download image, opening it is not proof that installation was completed. Inspect the intended destination before deciding that the Dock is the only broken part. An old shortcut may have pointed directly into the image’s temporary mounted volume.

Question Two: Does the Intended Copy Open Directly?

Launch the identified installed app from Finder. If it opens normally, inspect the version and expected interface. This gives you a working destination to use for the replacement Dock entry.

If macOS produces a security warning or compatibility error, preserve the actual message. Changing the icon cannot repair that refusal. If the app is active but has no visible window, investigate its window or session state separately rather than treating every unavailable interface as a missing file.

Question Three: Where Should the New Launcher Point?

Once the intended application works, remove the stale Dock entry using its normal controls, such as the available Remove from Dock action. Then add or retain the working app in the Dock. Removing this launcher is different from removing the application bundle itself.

Test the repaired item after a normal idle-session quit. Avoid closing the client merely for this convenience test if a Ledger OS update is progressing on the device. Keep the required update session intact and return to shortcut maintenance afterward.

If the Application Really Is Missing

Use the Ledger software download page to obtain the appropriate current distribution. Follow the selected edition’s installation route and evaluate any security alert before opening the software.

After installation, start the app from its actual destination. A new Dock item should refer to that installed location rather than a temporary image or stale download copy. A generic icon-repair program that requires wallet secrets is unrelated to this process.

A Mounted-Image Example

You opened the app in a DMG, pinned it, then ejected the image later. The pinned path can now be unavailable even if a separate installed application exists. Finding and launching the installed copy determines whether you need only a new shortcut or still need to finish installation.

This diagnosis also explains why remounting an old image can temporarily hide the symptom without establishing the correct permanent launch route. Use the intended installation rather than preserving an accidental dependency on old setup material.

Preserve Wallet Organization Separately

A Dock entry contains launch information, not your hardware wallet’s signing keys. Do not reset the signer or erase local account records to repair the icon. If broader reinstallation is genuinely needed, review program replacement and local-data removal as separate choices.

Dock Target Questions

Is Rebuilding the Entire Dock Necessary?

Begin with the one unavailable application target. A broad reset can disturb other preferences and still leave the intended Ledger bundle missing or incorrectly installed.

Can I Drag Any Downloaded File into the Dock?

First identify and open the correct installed application. A package or disk image has a different role, even if its icon and name resemble the app you want to launch.

What if the New Icon Still Opens an Old Version?

Inspect its target again and compare it with the directly opened installed copy. A version discrepancy is evidence about launch paths, not a reason to change the hardware recovery backup.
