  • Ledger Live Mac Accessory Approval: Restore USB Data Access

One Connection Can Require Two Approvals

A Mac accessory approval and a Ledger management approval happen at different ends of a connection. If Ledger Live cannot communicate over USB, establish whether the Mac has allowed the accessory before diagnosing a missing prompt on the signer. The client is now known as Ledger Wallet.

Apple documents this accessory control for Mac laptops with Apple silicon. Its absence on an Intel Mac or a desktop Mac is not by itself an application defect. Match your computer to the feature’s scope before searching for a missing toggle.

Review the Host’s Access Decision

On a relevant Mac laptop, unlock the computer and connect the intended accessory during an ordinary idle session. Inspect any new-accessory dialog and confirm it describes the connection you just made. Choosing an approval should be deliberate, not an instruction to trust every future USB peripheral.

Apple’s USB accessory guidance describes the controls in System Settings, Privacy & Security. Depending on the macOS release, inspect Accessories or the displayed Allow accessories to connect setting. A supervised machine can have its policy managed by an administrator.

If you previously denied the request, another ordinary connection attempt can present it again under Apple’s documented behavior. Do not use reconnecting as a casual test during a progressing Ledger OS update. Preserve the update’s required connection and follow its specific instructions.

Do Not Confuse Power with Permission

A connected device can receive power even when the host has not allowed data access. A working screen therefore does not establish that macOS has admitted the USB interface. The same visible power can also occur with a cable that does not support the needed data connection.

After the expected host approval, check whether communication advances. If the client now asks for unlocking or an on-device management confirmation, you have reached a new stage. If it still reports no device, compare the physical data path separately.

Complete the Signer’s Requested Action

Read the Ledger display and the client together. Unlock the hardware through its controls and respond to the intended management request when prompted. A macOS authorization does not approve a transaction, install a coin app automatically or expose wallet secrets to the host.

Use the state requested for the task. Account operations and device management can require different screens on the signer. Repeatedly opening a coin app is not a substitute for reading a management instruction, just as changing the host’s privacy setting does not unlock the device.

If Approval Was Granted but Detection Still Fails

Make an idle direct-USB comparison with a cable known to carry data. Apple’s USB power and connection troubleshooting covers appropriate direct-port and hub checks. Keep each change identifiable so you can distinguish an access refusal from an unstable adapter route.

For a managed computer, ask the administrator about the relevant policy rather than trying to remove supervision. For a missing control on an ineligible model, pursue that Mac’s actual connection problem instead of searching for a universal accessory-reset script.

A Locked-Host Example

Imagine the Ledger powers on after connection while the Mac remains locked. You do not yet know whether macOS has allowed data access. Unlocking and reviewing the appropriate system request can clarify that first condition. Only afterward does a missing device-management confirmation become the question to investigate.

Mac Accessory Questions

Should I Select Always Allow for Convenience?

Use the setting appropriate to your security preferences and Apple’s guidance. A single wallet diagnosis does not require blanket approval of every accessory.

Why Might an Old Accessory Need Attention Again?

Apple describes cases involving the host’s locked state where renewed unlocking is necessary. Check the current host prompt rather than assuming the client lost its wallet data.

Is the Permission Dialog a Place for the Ledger PIN?

No. The host controls peripheral access, while the device handles its own unlock. Never provide the recovery backup or hardware PIN to a website or utility claiming to authorize Mac USB data.
