Finish One Session Before Starting Its Replacement
If Ledger Live setup says the application is already open, the installer may be waiting for the current client to release program files. Identify that running session before approving automatic closure. The software now uses the Ledger Wallet name, and an older installed copy can still be involved.
Look for an ordinary host-software update versus a device operation. Replacing the computer application and installing Ledger OS on a signer are different activities. If the device is actively progressing through an OS update, keep its required session and connection available instead of closing it to satisfy another setup window.
Interpret What Remains Open
| What you observe | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| The wallet window is visible | A session is available to inspect and quit |
| The window closed but the app remains active | Window closure may not have ended the process |
| A different copy launches from a shortcut | The shortcut may target another installation |
| Setup still names an open app after normal exit | The remaining instance needs identification |
An installer message does not explain which copy owns the session. Keep the relevant path and version if several copies or user sessions are involved. Guessing which program to remove can turn a simple open-process condition into an incomplete installation.
Exit Through the Application’s Normal Controls
On a Mac, select the app and use its Quit command or Command-Q. Apple’s application exit guidance distinguishes normal quitting from force quitting. The window’s red button can leave the application available in the background.
On Windows, use the client’s normal exit control where provided. If setup continues to find a process, inspect the identified application in Task Manager rather than ending unrelated processes by a broad text match. On Linux, check the instance associated with the intended AppImage and desktop launcher.
Let the exit complete, then return to a single installer attempt. Opening the client again to see whether it closed can immediately recreate the condition. A second setup window can also make it unclear which attempt is awaiting action.
A Frozen Instance Needs a Different Decision
If normal exit does not respond, preserve the visible error and inspect the hardware activity first. Only when no progressing device operation depends on the process should ordinary host recovery actions be considered. A failed device-update state should use the actual model’s instructions.
Avoid deleting installed files while a client still uses them. A normal host restart can clear an idle stale session, but it should not be used as an indiscriminate way to interrupt firmware work. On managed computers, an administrator may need to identify activity belonging to another logged-in session.
Resume with the Intended Package
Confirm the installer’s source through the official Ledger application route. The fact that setup recognized a process does not validate the incoming package. Read any publisher or security alert independently.
After installation, open the intended installed destination and inspect its version. If an old shortcut still launches another copy, repair the shortcut after the correct copy is known to work. That is different from repeating installation because an unrelated old window remained open.
Running-Instance Questions
Does Closing the Client Remove Its Account List?
An ordinary exit is different from uninstalling the client or resetting local data. Do not combine those actions just because setup needs the process to stop.
Is Force Closing Always Faster?
It bypasses the application’s normal exit handling and can remove useful evidence. Start with an ordinary exit and check active hardware work before escalating a genuinely unresponsive host.
Should I Provide the Device Backup to Confirm Closure?
A computer process is not closed by proving wallet ownership. Neither the recovery phrase nor the hardware PIN belongs in an installer dialog or support message about a running application.
